About Poppy:

The poppy is an extraordinary flower, with seeds dispersed by the wind that can lie dormant in the ground for a long time. If the ground is disturbed the seeds germinate. As early as spring 1915 after the first cold winter at war, corn poppies were seen growing in clusters in the region round Ypres in Belgium. Every year this happened and the sight of these delicate, vibrant flowers caught the attention of a Canadian soldier by the name of John McCrae, who was inspired to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, containing the famous lines:‘In Flanders fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row’. After the war the poppy became the symbol of peace and remembrance and the first poppyday appeal was launched in 1921
